Before purchasing a digital multimeter, think about what you want to use it for. Evaluate your basic measurement and workplace requirements. Think about whether you would like to receive basic information about measurements or to be informed about other options such as troubleshooting.

Denotes the maximum number of displayable digits (includes zero, i.e. 6.000 count meters can read 0-5999 V on the display). The higher the count the higher the number of displayable digits (i.e. resolution) without having to change to the next reading range. For instance, a 230.3 volt reading taken with a 2000 count meter is displayed as 230 V. The same voltage reads as 230.3 V on 4000 count meters.

True RMS (=root means square) measurement enables taking accurate readings of both sinusoidal and non-sinusoidal voltage and current wave forms. Non-sinusoidal wave forms are mostly observed in dimmers, speed controllers, clocked switches, pulse chargers and electronic motor control units. Using conventional average-responding meters to test above components frequently results in getting readings that are widely off the mark.

Auto Range means that the meter automatically chooses the most appropriate reading range for a signal, thereby maximising display resolution. Means you can focus on taking readings instead of fiddling with settings.

Polyswitches are resettable fuses that limits the test current in the case a reading exceeds the upper current limit of the device, preventing the built-in fuse from blowing. Getting the reading range wrong or connecting test leads the wrong way is something that may easily happen during training courses or in the classroom. Until now this inevitably blew the fuse incurring substantial additional costs.
