Useful information about gears, motor pinions and bevel gears
In this category of technical modeling you will find mechanical engineering accessories such as gears, motor pinions, bevel gears and worm gear sets for gears on your models. The application possibilities are manifold and range in the modeling of functional vehicles, railways, airplanes and ships, prototypes for example of machines or rotors at windmills up to small everyday helpers with practical automation processes. Gears are used, for example, to craft small movements.

What was transmission?
Gears are forming elements that cause motion changes. In most cases, a force is transmitted and the direction of motion is changed.
-
Gears work mechanically.
-
You need a drive (power machine) that feeds energy.
-
This energy is converted into a benefit of the driven machine on the output side.
Practical advice
Gearboxes have a drive side and an output side. In between, the supplied energy is converted into a working benefit. Drive belts for transferring drive energy to the driven machine can be found here!
Which transmission components are available for model construction?
Gear technology is realized by mechanical components. The market for model components offers almost everything was used in large machines. In our shop model builders, hobby constructors as well as commercial designers of prototypes and miniature buildings find what they need.
Cogwheels and accessories

Helical gears, also known as cylindrical wheels, are the most commonly used gears. The teeth are located at the outer edge of the wheel. The spur gear wheel engages its counter gear. The axles of both gears run in parallel with the spur gear transmission. Helical gears, double-angled teeth and bow toothing are also possible.
Spur gear unit

Are popular because of their simple design, which can be done with few moving parts, and because of their high efficiency, because the force is transferred directly mechanically when the teeth of two spur gears are joined together. The disadvantage, however, is the small structural translations and the relatively loud operation, when all teeth interlock individually.
Steel cogwheels
Are made of metal and therefore particularly robust. They are suitable for functional model machines, while plastic and wood gears in miniature replicas usually only mimic the visual impression of the originals. Steel gears are also used in the creative development of prototypes of gearboxes or for the simulation of industrial processes, as well as in clock movements.
Gear combinations

Consists of a larger and a smaller gear with different number of teeth. Both are firmly grouped together from a single casting and thus have the same rotational axis.

Gear assortments
Usually include several gears that can be fitted to one or more gear gears. Mainly the gears are made of plastic or wood for the basic craft requirements and are therefore suitable for experiments with low-cost model constructions, which can be used quickly with a little adhesive.
Gear rods
Are rods with gear outlets where a gear can move back and forth. This pairing is known as the rack and pinion gear.
By the way: Even real gear trains move on racks. These are called toothed rails because of their special size and length.

Search tip: Toothed belt gearboxes consist of a gear wheel of a belt that mesh. The best-known application example is the chain on the bicycle. In our modeling shop you will find

Bevel wheels
Power is transmitted to bevel gear units by bevel gears. They transfer torques and rotational movements. Because the input and output shafts are at an angle to each other, gears with bevel gears are also referred to as bevel gears.
Motor pinion

In a gear pair, the smaller gear usually takes over the drive. The smaller gear is called a pinion gear – hence the designation as a motor pinion. The motor pinion transmits the power of the drive side to a larger gear, whereby the direction of movement and usually also the ratio, i.e. the distance of the tooth edges to each other, change from the small pinion to the larger gear.
Tip: Screw locking for fixing the grub screw of a motor pinion can be found here in our shop

Worm gear sets
Worm gear drives are among the screw roller gearboxes. They consist of a screw-shaped worm gear and the worm gear, a gear that engages the worm gear. Whether the gear drives the auger or vice versa, the practical application is important. Worm gear sets in our shop contain both the auger and the associated worm gear.
Lubricants that ensure that gears work relatively wear-free can be found here in our shop!
