Environment & Climate Protection
Conrad is EMAS certified
As a responsible company, we consistently align our business processes with environmental considerations and have codified this in our group-wide environmental policy.
Since 2006, our corporate headquarters in Hirschau and our logistics center in Wernberg-Köblitz have had an environmental management system verified in accordance with the EMAS Regulation, as well as an EMAS-validated environmental statement. As an EMAS-certified company, we are committed to continuously improving our environmental performance beyond legal requirements.
EMAS stands for Eco-Management and Audit Scheme. Any organization seeking to improve its environmental performance can implement an EMAS-compliant environmental management system. This voluntary European Union initiative is open to all industries and companies of all sizes.
Our carbon footprint
-
Our goal: a 42% reduction in our CO2 emissions by 2030 compared to 2022
-
Our German locations use 100% green electricity
-
Our Promise: CO2-offset shipping for 95% of our packages
For years, we have been successfully reducing the carbon footprint at our company locations. In Hirschau and Wernberg, four photovoltaic systems generate electricity from renewable sources—these enable us to generate approximately 18% of our total energy consumption from renewable sources ourselves. The remainder of our local electricity consumption has been covered by 100% renewable energy from hydropower since 2013.
To reduce our direct CO2 emissions, we are continuously implementing measures to improve our energy efficiency, such as energy-efficient renovations. Furthermore, at our Wernberg site, we have invested in a wood chip power plant as an additional heating system to enable us to use biomass as an energy source there as well. As a result, we were able to achieve a 58% reduction in our local Scope 1 emissions as early as the first heating season of 2023.
At Conrad, we’re committed to electric mobility: With three public charging stations for electric cars each in Hirschau and Wernberg-Köblitz, we’re supporting the energy transition. Employees and the public can charge their vehicles there while they’re visiting.
We also prioritize resource conservation when shipping our goods. For this reason, we use only cardboard boxes made from recycled fibers and rely on eco-friendly packaging materials such as recycled crumpled paper or biodegradable corn chips.
In collaboration with our transportation service providers, we are already offsetting a large portion of the CO2 emissions generated by our outbound shipments. Since the end of 2023, this percentage has been 95%.
