Description
Steam locomotive 01 161 of the German State Railroad Company.
The two-cylinder engines of the series 01 are considered the first express train locomotives, which were developed according to the unit construction program The first construction lots were equipped with front wheels of 800 mm diameter and approved for 120 km/h. From 01 102 onwards, the gauge wheels of 1,000 mm and reinforced brakes were used, enabling the maximum speed permitted to be increased to 130 km/h.
The great time of the 01 series began with the 1934 summer timetable. The services that were driven in those years were a challenge for the machines and the staff. After the Second World War, these were only reached again by electric locomotives and large diesel locomotives.
In 1935, Henschel delivered the locomotive 01 161 to Bw Hannover, which served from the center the East-West Magistrale Hamm-Magdeburg and the North-South Magistrale to Hamburg and Kassel.
