Märklin 88068 Z steam locomotive BR 78 of DB, MHI

Back in 1936, the then Lübeck-Büchener railway had developed steam-guided turning trains at Henschel. The young Federal Railways resumed this idea after 1949 and took the first steam reversible trains into operation in 1951 – pulled and pushed by locomotives of the series 78 (pr. T 18). These are perfect for: Strong, fast, reliable and available in large quantities. During the steam shuttle train, the master was guided by the shipping system, where the master gave instructions on how to operate the machine and the control system. Such devices were in each case installed in the control wagon and in the driver's cab of the locomotives. In the sliding operation, the engine driver sat in the control wagon and served the brakes. The heater acted as per command of steam engine, the control and the regulator, and in addition to the common heating tasks. This system proved to be so good that 74 steam locomotives were already used in the turn-stroke service in 1959. The T 18 traveled in suburban traffic from Hamburg and Frankfurt, in the Ruhr fast traffic, in the district of Hanover, around Wuppertal and finally also in Saarland. The 18 push-pull T was the longest in the S-Bahn run-up operation between Hamburg, Bergedorf and Aumühle. They were replaced there for the 1968/69 winter timetable of V 100.
