Description
The epoxy powder coated aluminum housing with drip protection and stainless steel brackets withstand even the harshest environmental conditions: Heat, moisture and salty air. An acrylic coating protects the printed circuit boards against corrosion as best as possible. Temperature sensors ensure that the current components are always operated within the specified limits. Under extreme environmental conditions, the output current is automatically reduced if necessary.
Flexible
Apart from a CAN bus (NMEA2000) interface, a rotary knob, DIP switches and potentiometers are also available to adapt the charging algorithm to a specific battery and its conditions of use. For a complete overview of the various options, refer to the manual.
Synchronized parallel operation
Several chargers can be synchronized with the CAN bus interface. This is achieved by simply connecting the chargers with each other via RJ45 UTP cable. Please refer to the manual for further details.
The correct amount of charge for a lead-acid battery with a suitable constant voltage time:
If only weak discharges occur, the constant voltage time is kept short to avoid overcharging of the battery. After a deep discharge, the constant voltage phase is automatically extended to ensure that the battery is fully charged.
To prevent damage from excessive gas development through battery saver mode:
In order to shorten the charging time, the aim is to achieve the highest possible charging current in conjunction with a high constant voltage. However, in order to avoid excessive gas development toward the end of the constant current phase, the Skylla-i limits the speed of the voltage rise after the gassing voltage has been reached.
Less maintenance and aging when the battery is idle:
The storage mode is activated whenever no discharge has taken place within 24 hours. In storage mode, the charge retention voltage is then reduced to 2.2 V/cell (26.4 V for a 24 V battery) to minimize gas development and corrosion on the positive plates. Once a week, the voltage is increased back to the constant voltage threshold to refresh the battery. This results in a kind of equalizing charge that prevents electrolyte stratification and sulphation - the two main causes of premature battery failure.
To extend battery life:
The temperature sensor provides for a decreasing charging voltage when the battery temperature increases. This is particularly important for gel batteries or when high temperature fluctuations are expected at all times.
Battery voltage sensor:
To compensate for voltage losses due to cable resistances, the Skylla-i has a voltage sensor in the charging circuit, so that the battery always receives the correct charging current.
Suitable for AC and DC power supply (AC-DC and DC-DC operation):
The charger can also be operated with a DC power supply.
Use as power source:
Due to the perfectly stabilized output voltage, the Skylla-i can be used as a power source when no batteries or large buffer capacitors are available.
Suitable for lithium-ion batteries (LiFePo4):
A simple On/Off control can be attached by connecting a relay or an optocoupler output with open collector from a Li-Ion BMS to the remote control connection of the charger. Alternatively, voltage and current can be fully controlled by connecting to the galvanically isolated CAN bus connection.
