Description

Diesel railcar with control car series 628.2/928.2
We write the 1970s. On West German rail tracks, the old red rail buses dominate local traffic. In order not to lose the last passengers to the car, the Federal Railways had to think about a successor. And the results speak for themselves. In 1974, the first new double-engined 628.0-series vehicles came into service. This series proved to be the best like the three single-engine prototypes of the 628.1 series built in 1981. However, it should take years for the serial version to be commissioned. It then came in 1988/89 with 150 copies as series 628.2 in the DB inventory and heralded a new era in local and regional traffic. Together with some federal states that gave subsidies, modern urban transport concepts were developed which were considered to be a pioneering achievement at the time and were used as a model for the later cycle traffic in the regions. Compared to the buses, the comfortable 628.2, which even offered a 1 class compartment, were a real quantum leap. The rail cars were popular with the passengers and thus the DB tried to make the elegant 628.2 even more attractive. After a few years, most vehicles received an improved interior with wheelchair ramp and the new traffic red Regio paint finish. For more than a quarter of a century, the 628.2, some of them in multiple traction, did their job reliably and did not only put the old buses on the siding. They were a real milestone and also tell on the model railway about the beginning of a new local traffic age.
