Description
The operation with battery-operated railcar was introduced in Germany before the First World War. The 2-piece "Wittfeld" battery-operated rail car, whose batteries were housed in the distinctive front structures, was in use until after World War II. After 1945, the Deutsche Bundesbahn began to look into this type of drive again. The ETA made a name for itself as a "Limburg cigar" in 176, but only eight of them were built. From 1953 onwards, the more cost-effective ETA 150, which had approximately the same features, was put into service in large quantities. A total of 232 units were built from the ETA 150 (from 1968 series 515) until 1965. Furthermore, 216 ESA 150 control cars (later model 815) were put into operation.
