FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions about Endoscope Cameras
How do endoscope cameras work?
An endoscope can be used to examine pipes, cavities and other hard-to-reach places. The term endoscope derives from the ancient Greek words éndon for inside and scopein for observing. Endoscope stands for inner observation. For this purpose, the endoscope probe is inserted into the area that is not visible from the outside. There are tools at the front of the gooseneck that enable work to be carried out indoors.
Historical: The first endoscopes were tunnel-shaped telescopes , sometimes with lighting, with the help of which only areas lying straight ahead were visible. Later mirrors partly made it possible to look around the corner. However, the diameters of such devices were very large, which considerably limits the application possibilities.
Only the modern extension of the endoscope with camera technology enables the view in entwined areas. Modern endoscopes are equipped with mini-cameras at the endoscope tip, which can transfer images from the inspection in real time or save them for subsequent evaluation.
For this purpose, an additional cable for transmitting the image signal is usually located in the probe. Only in recent years have advanced endoscope cameras with radio transmission of the image sequences been developed.
By the way: Modern medical treatment methods use Endoscope for diagnosis and for minimally invasive procedures. The endoscopes in our shop, on the other hand, are not intended for medical purposes .

Our practical tip: Observe the application area
In shafts, wall cavities and metal-shielded areas, you should still use endoscope with a fixed cable connection to the camera, because this causes interference to the radio signal regularly, which can significantly impair the video transmission.
Most endoscopes have waterproof cameras, so that pictures of wet or damp places can be transferred without any problem.
Modular endoscopes: The right equipment for every application
For beginners and hobby applications, low-cost endoscopes are sufficient as a complete solution. If you need more functional scope for different application areas and professional use, you are better advised with a modular endoscope.
Endoscope with exchangeable cameras and removable wireless display.
Professional endoscopes are modular in design and offer the possibility to extend the basic device with various exchangeable components.
For example, you can replace or supplement the camera with a mirror or a gripper. The use of different probes is also possible with a modular endoscope and suitable accessories.
The probe cross-section (probe Ø) is decisive for practical use, so that the probe does not get stuck on the way and the probe length, which must reach the desired point. Endoscope probes can also be found in our shop.
Further accessories for modular endoscopes such as adapters, cleaning kits, tool attachments and transport aids are available on the other pages.
Make sure that the connections on the basic unit are compatible with those of the additional component.
What selection criteria are available for endoscope cameras?
Display resolutions:
The display resolution specifies the resolution of the screen for displaying the images for the endoscope camera with integrated monitor. The higher the resolution, the more details you can see. Also select a sufficiently large, integrated display if you do not want to connect an external device for playback of the images.
Camera resolution
The camera resolution specifies the sharpness of the original images from the camera. For accurate display, you need a display that can display the same level of detail. The connection of a display with a higher resolution than that of the camera is useless, because the original image or video cannot generate a better resolution for the display without the use of software for image optimization.
Protection class
The types of protection indicate how well endoscope cameras are protected against dust and moisture, which is particularly important when used in humid areas such as sewage pipes. A distinction is made in many devices between the protection class of the basic device, i.e. the technical support, which is held outside in the hand, and the protection class of the probe, which is introduced into the cavity, since in many cases the introduced part of the endoscope is exposed to more potentially damaging influences.

Our practical tip: Data transfer
Many endoscopes offer the possibility of a USB connection with PC and notebook . This makes sense because data, videos and pictures can be transferred via USB. Some devices can even transfer the picture to a tablet or smartphone via WiFi.
Other camera specifications
The special features refer mainly to specifications of camera technology, such as lighting options by additional LEDs. Here are some important selection criteria:
- Video and photo support: The camera not only displays a video, but can also record still images of important events.
- Audio function: Cameras with audio function not only support image recording, but can also record the sound for this.
- Pan function: A pan function allows you to precisely align the camera head inside the cavity.
- LED lighting: LEDs on the camera head require illumination if you want to inspect dark areas that are to be illuminated so that something can be seen in the images of the endoscope camera. Other LEDs on endoscope cameras are used to monitor the device status, for example as a low battery warning light.
- Focusing ability: The camera is able to focus on specific areas, i.e. focus. This is a picture enhancement function.
- Zoom: The camera can zoom in on the shot to see more detail. This works just like with a conventional digital camera via an adjustable lens.
- Recording option: The camera can record the video and send the recording to an external monitor.
- Storage option: The camera can save the recording on an integrated storage medium, such as an SD card. An SD card slot enables a quick replacement of the memory card when it is full.
- Wi-Fi: WLAN-enabled endoscope cameras can transmit your pictures wirelessly to other devices such as laptops, smartphones and tablets, on which the video sequences can be processed and stored better than in the endoscope basic device. However, Wi-Fi endoscopes can only be used where there is sufficient radio contact from the cavity outside to the receiver. Behind thick walls and metal pillars, this is difficult on a regular basis.
- USB-connection: USB-endoscope, partly with micro-USB-connection, can be connected directly to computer and playback devices. Such cameras are also available as a waterproof USB endoscope camera.
- Battery level indicator and auto shut-off: Both functions prevent the endoscope from suddenly not receiving enough current for its function during use. Auto-off prevents the battery from discharging when the device is switched off or switched on unintentionally during transport. The battery level indicator warns if the camera batteries should be charged soon or switched to stationary power supply with power supply.
- Acid resistance: In particular in laboratories and in the automotive sector, an endoscope can come into contact with acid, for example from a car battery. For this purpose, the camera should be acid-resistant. There are also oil- and gasoline-resistant endoscopes for such purposes.
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions about Endoscope Cameras
My camera was severely damaged during use. Is the separate exchange possible?
Not all endoscopes can easily be replaced. Therefore, pay attention to a modular device at the time of initial creation, where you can change or supplement individual components if necessary.
My endoscope is too short to inspect the desired location. What can I do?
Some endoscope cameras offer zoom functions in this case. If you still don't get far enough with it, you can find probes for extending endoscopes here in the shop.
